Overview

What is spray foam insulation?

Spray foam insulation is spray polyurethane foam (SPF). It is made from two liquid components that are mixed as they are sprayed and react on contact, expanding into a foam that cures in place inside the wall, roof, or floor cavity.

That expansion is the main difference between spray foam and materials such as fiberglass batts or blown-in insulation. Batts and loose-fill products are placed into a cavity and work best when they fit it closely. Spray foam grows to fill the cavity it is sprayed into, including the gaps, corners, and irregular spaces around framing, wiring, and penetrations — which is why it is often chosen where air sealing and a tighter building envelope are the goal.

Spray foam is not one product. It is available in two main types — open-cell and closed-cell — with different densities, expansion behavior, and moisture characteristics. Choosing between them is a project decision, not a default, and the right answer depends on the building assembly, moisture management, HVAC configuration, project goals, applicable codes, and site conditions.
